Mt Washington Climb Challenge Additional Information

Mt Washington is the highest peak in the Northeastern United States, and stands as the greatest challenge in the Eastern United States. Part of the White Mountains range, Mt Washington has a storied history, renowned for its use as a weather observatory. In fact, its erratic weather is one of its defining features. It is often completely covered in snow, and during the harsher months presents one of the most challenging atmospheres for a climb of its height.

For climbers of large mountains though, Mt Washington is not the intense challenge of a high Rockies peaks or ascending the Alps. Mt Washington, instead, is a good place for climbers who aspire to the highest peaks in the world to start their journey.

That is not to say, however, that you need not prepare for Mt Washington itself. Soem mountain ranges that provide a good challenge and appropriate preparation for climbing Mt Washington are the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee and the Adirondack Mountains in New York. The Great Smoky Mountains are protected by the United States' most visited national park, which offers many different climbs, some very strenuous and technically difficult, to its many peaks. The Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York are closer to Mt Washington, which is located in northern New Hampshire. Climbing the tallest of these ranges will prepare you for the harsher conditions of Mt Washington.

Whatever ranges you decide to prepare on, though, it is most important to hone your body physically. You must start conditioning the moment you decide to go on the climb. Start running to build up a base of endurance, adding on miles and picking up the pace. Your lungs should be able to handle the thin air of higher elevations. Make sure also that you are eating right. Become accustomed to whole grain carbs and lean meat that provides a good source of protein to build muscle. Finally, make sure you have the proper equipment to make the climb. Consult with a local guide if possible to ensure that you are fully prepared for the attempt.
