How to do the Reeves Deadlift - Learn Proper Reeves Deadlift Form

  1. Step 1: Load a barbell with the desired amount of weight. If the weight plates have handles on them, be sure the handles are facing up toward the ceiling.
  2. Step 2: Next, set up into a traditional deadlift stance, except instead of grabbing the bar, grab the weight plate handles.
  3. Step 3: Next, perform the same motion you normally would when executing a traditional deadlift, except once at the top perform a shrug.
  4. Step 4: Reverse movement back to starting position. This completes one rep.

  1. Variation 1: Perform a Reeves Deadlift with straight legs and without shrugging.
  2. Variation 2: Perform exercise on an EZ-bar for a shorter reach.

  1. Tip 1: Imagine you are trying to touch your shoulders to your ears when you shrug the weight up.
  2. Tip 2: Perform the exercise in one fluid motion. Don't stop at the top and then do a shrug, move right into the shrug as you come up out of the deadlift.
  3. Tip 3: Wear a weight lifting belt to avoid injury to your lower back.
