A woman who is carrying more than one baby is considered to have a higher-risk pregnancy than one who will be giving birth to a single child.

Mothers of multiples have different needs, and this extends to the amount of exercise they can do as well as the amount of weight they should be gaining during this process.

Visiting your obstetrician is important in any pregnancy, but when there is more than one baby involved, is even more imperative that the mother-to-be gets regular checkups.

The pregnant woman must be monitored for symptoms of pregnancy-induced hypertension, as well as preterm labor.

Any exercise program for a woman who is expecting triplets should be discussed with their doctor.

Some forms of exercise, such as high-impact aerobics, are not recommended at all during pregnancy for moms of multiples.

Engaging in this type of activity may trigger pre-term labor, which is why your doctor will tell you to stay away from class until after your babies have been born.

Can I Exercise If I’m Pregnant With Triplets in My First Trimester?

Your doctor may allow you to do some mild exercise during the first 12 weeks of your pregnancy. If you are given the go-ahead, you want to avoid any activities that will put downward pressure on your cervix, or that raise your body temperature significantly.

Exercise that is considered safe for pregnant women carrying triplets may include activities like swimming, prenatal yoga and stretching. Another option would be riding a stationary bicycle. Kegel exercises, which are used to strengthen the pelvic floor, are another option.

Even if your doctor tells you that you can exercise in early pregnancy with triplets, don’t overdo it. This is not the time to get too hot or to allow yourself to get tired out. If you start to feel unwell or experience contractions, stop exercising immediately and call your doctor.

Can I Exercise If I’m Pregnant With Triplets in My Second and Third Trimesters?

Your doctor will probably tell you to cut back on your exercise once you get past week 12 in your pregnancy. Be sure to find out exactly what cutting back means in your case.

If you are used to having an active lifestyle it can be hard to be told that you should take it easy and no longer exercise. Keep in mind that you are not being punished by being told to stop your normal routine. Instead, you are doing what you need to do to give the three lives you are carrying their best chance of being born healthy.

How Can Meditation Replace Exercise During Pregnancy With Triplets?

If you have been told not to exercise, try meditating as a way to relieve stress and recharge your batteries. You can do so in any position you find comfortable. Try sitting up or lying on your side in a quiet space where you won’t be distracted.

It will take some practice before you master the art of meditation. In the beginning, start by focusing on the rhythm of your own breathing. Take a slow, deep breath in through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Don’t hold your breath; your babies are relying on you to provide them with their oxygen supply until they are born.

If you find it easier to focus if you make a noise, as opposed to trying to meditate in silence, go ahead. You can try saying “so” to yourself as you breathe in, and “hum” as you exhale. During this time, try to put all extraneous thoughts out of your mind. If one tries to get in, gently push it aside. Some people find it helpful to count from 1-10 aloud when learning how to meditate.

Over time, you will find it easier to get into a relaxed state and stay there. Start by setting aside a couple of minutes to try to meditate and then slowly lengthen your sessions. If you find it helpful, use this time to be in the moment with the sensations going on in your belly. Focus on what you are feeling and whether you happen to be feeling movement then or not.

It may be OK to exercise during pregnancy with triplets if your doctor says so. You will likely to advised to cut back during the second trimester and told to stop entirely once you hit the third one. Your goal is to avoid early labor, which may endanger your babies, and not being able to exercise for a time is a small price to pay when you consider your children’s health.
