Sodium Molybdate Overview

Sodium molybdate, an inorganic salt, is found in dietary supplements as a source of molybdenum. Used as a nutrient supplement of molybdenum, sodium molybdate is a synthetic, which is created when molybdenum oxide is dissolved in sodium hydroxide. 

Nutritional supplements typically use sodium molybdate as the preferred form of molybdenum. Athletes, such as bodybuilders, or individuals training themselves in daily exercise, look for sodium molybdate.

They will ingest ammonium molybdate or sodium molybdate in beverages such as energy drinks, if they do not take in a dietary supplement.

Sodium Molybdate And Therapeutic Treatment of Type 1 Diabetes

The International Molybdenum Association, reports on a study that was completed by scientists at Biological Trace Element Research.

Scientists found that before transplantation, sodium molybdate could improve the function of islet cells, when combined with the medicinal plant Teucrium polium L. and sodium orthovanadate. They are looking to islet transplantation in the therapeutic treatment of type 1 diabetes.

According to the study, scientists found sodium molybdate to have an antioxidative potential that affected islets that was highly beneficial.

When sodium molybdate was administered either alone or combined with the above-mentioned, the insulin secretion was increased at high glucose concentration.  Isolated islets are taken from a donor pancreas to place the islets into someone else. 

Sodium molybdate, along with other substances, may be a therapeutic treatment for type 1 diabetes. However, it is still in the experimental stages.

Sodium Molybdate Beneficial in Managing Hyperlipidemia

Another interesting study was reported in the Drug Discoveries and Therapeutics journal, published by the Shandong University China-Japan Cooperation Center for Drug Discovery and Screen and the Medicine and Health Research Co. Ltd – pages 62 – 69. 

Hyperlipidemia is excessive lipids are fatty substances, mostly triglycerides and cholesterol, that attach themselves to proteins and travel in the blood. The combination of fat and protein is known as lipoproteins, low density and high density lipoproteins.

Heart disease is associated with high levels of low-density lipoproteins cholesterol, as it is largely responsible for artery blockages. These blockages eventually bring on heart attacks. 

Scientists administered sodium molybdate, either alone or combined with atorvastatin, to hyperlipidemic hamsters for 30 days consecutively. The scientists positively concluded that sodium molybdate, in combination with atorvastatin, proved to be beneficial in the management of hyperlipidemia.

They found that the combination improved the antioxidant condition in the liver’s enzymes, with minimal disturbances, as well as showing a reduction in blood lipids at a maximum level. 

Other Benefits of Sodium Molybdate

Sodium molybdate is used in market gardening, as well as in fertilizers. It mixes well with other nutrients and products. Only small quantities of the white crystalline powder are required. 

Sodium molybdate is noted for its iron storage in tissues and is crucial for specific enzyme activity. Sodium molybdate is also beneficial in correcting any deficiency of sodium, as well as copper deficiencies. 

Many of the benefits that are found in molybdenum are also found in sodium molybdate. The European Food Safety Authority approved sodium molybdate, as well as ammonium molybdate, as safe substances to be added in nutritional supplements.

Sodium molybdate is also found in many dietary supplements that are used for weight loss, weight management and body-building. It is a source of molybdenum, which is known to help the body with effectively digesting food. 

Recommended Dietary Allowance of Sodium Molybdate

The daily intake of molybdenum is directly related to the soil type, as well as the condition of the soil. For this reason, the Recommended Dietary Allowance can fluctuate, according to the European Food Safety Authority. 

With the pollution found in water and the depletion of quality soil, it has been noted that crops are yielding less nutrients, which directly affects the entire food chain. 

Although there is a Recommended Dietary Allowance for molybdenum, there is no established limit for sodium molybdate. Since only small amounts of sodium molybdate are needed, it would be wise to stay close to the RDA given for molybdenum.

The U. S. Food and Nutrition Board lists the Recommended Daily Allowance for molybdenum as follows:

  • Children one to three years: 17 micrograms per day
  • Children four to eight years: 22 micrograms per day
  • Children nine: 13 – 34 mcg per day
  • Adolescents 14 -18 years: 43mcg/day. 

For females who are pregnant or breastfeeding, the recommended dietary allowance for molybdenum is 50mcg/day.
